WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team swept the top three places in both the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, and got a key first-place finish from Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis.) in the 500 freestyle en route to their first dual-meet win of the season, a 100-75 triumph over UW-River Falls Friday evening at the Jul Gernes Pool.

Gruenke clocked a time of 5:26.22 in winning the 500, while Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) led the Cardinals' sweep in the backstroke, touching the wall in 58.54, while Shawn McCarthy (Crystal Lake, Ill.) — swimming in his final collegiate home meet — fueled SMU's breaststroke sweep with a first-place time of 1:05.78.

The Cardinal men's 200 medley relay team also picked up a first, as McCarthy and Schultz teamed with Ben Chastek (St. Paul, Minn.) and Kyle Van Lith (Appleton, Wis.) to win in 1:46.30.

The Cardinal women's team wasn't quite as fortunate as its men's counterpart, falling to the Falcons 130-92.

Katie Krebsbach (Mendota Heights, Minn.), one of seven SMU seniors competing in front of the home crowd for the final time, picked up a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 200 IM (2:28.24) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.18). Dianna Kyllo (Kasson, Minn.) chipped in a first in the one-meter diving (152.20) and Jennifer Phillips (Red Wing, Minn.) led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.33.
