Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team was hoping a week off would be just what the doctor ordered as the Cardinals looked to snap out of a four-game funk Saturday afternoon against St. John's.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the doctor didn't make house calls, as St. John's handed SMU its fifth straight loss, 4-3 in overtime, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
Brent Anderson (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored a pair of goals for the Cardinals (2-4-0 MIAC, 5-6-1 overall), including the game-tying goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. SJU countered right back, however, getting the game winner from Andy Witchger with 2:34 remaining in the first 15-minute overtime period.
Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) accounted for the Cardinals' other goal, opening the scoring at the 7:23 mark on an assist from John Brown (Cary, Ill.), who assisted on two of SMU's three goals.
With SMU lead 1-0 at halftime, SJU scored back-to-back goals lmidway through the second half to take a 2-1 advantage. Anderson knotted the game at 2-2 less than two minutes after the Johnnies had taken the lead, but the game didn't stay tied long as Joe Schmidt scored SJU's third goal of the game five minutes later, setting up Anderson's game-tying heroics.
Matt Peck (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished with 14 saves for the Cardinals, while Kevin Bell had 15 saves for St. John's
