Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — For 82 minutes, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team dominated Hamline in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field Tuesday afternoon.
Problem is, a collegiate soccer game lasts 90 minutes.
And in those eight minutes, Hamline scored four times late in the second half en route to a 4-0 victory over the Cardinals.
"The frustrating thing is, we played a pretty decent game — especially in the second half," said SMU coach Dan Blank, whose team dropped to 1-6-1 in conference place and 3-9-2 overall. "We controlled the play for most of the game, it's just that eight-minute lapse in the first half that cost us."
Kristin Bedell put the Pipers on the board at the 26:40 mark, chipping the ball over SMU goalkeeper Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.).
Trying to repeat the magic of Saturday's 2-0 win over UW-Stout, Blank again pulled O'Hearn out of the goal and inserted her in the midlfield in hopes of generating some offense. Unlike Saturday, however, the move backfired on the Cardinals as Hamline used a couple of lucky bounces — and a little help from a tail wind — to score three times in four minutes on back-up goalkeeper Dianna Kyllo (Kasson, Minn.).
"It was one of those things," said Blank. "It was like anything that could go right, did (for Hamline). The wind played a huge factor on two of the goals — both just seemed to carry much farther than Dianna expected and they just sailed over her head."
Down, but not out, the Cardinals came out in the second half and played what Blank called, "one of the best halves of soccer we've played all season." Unfortunately, as dominating as SMU's offense was, the Cardinals could not seem to get the ball in the net.
"We could have easily scored four or five goals in that second half," said Blank, who had to settle for a single goal — from Kelli Mooney (Maple Grove, Minn.) off a feed from Bernadette Balla (Barrington, Ill.). "We had a ton of chances, we just couldn't convert."
