Game Summary
CLARMONT, Calif. — Quick-starting Pomona-Pitzer scored a goal in the first 15 minutes of each half en route to a 2-0 nonconference victory over the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team Sunday afternoon.
"It was another one of those games where we certainly played well enough to win, but a bad bounce here and a fluke goal there, and we lose 2-0," admitted SMU coach Eric Luzzi, whose Cardinals (6-7-0 overall) had just snapped a season-high five-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Hamline last Wednesday. "Both of their goals weren't exactly what I'd call 'good' goals. The first was on a ball from about 40 yards out that the guy (Mario Velez) was just trying to cross and it hits the far post and goes in. And the second came after we had just dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half and all of the sudden they get a counter and score."
Matt Peck (Eau Claire, Wis.) finished with six saves for the Cardinals, who are back in action Monday, traveling to Chapman (Calif.) for a nonconference game, before returning to conference play on Saturday at Bethel.
