Game Summary
ORANGE, Calif. — So much for a little fun in the sun.
The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team's trip to California was anything but a vacation. Just 24 hours after Pomona-Pitzer roughed up the Cardinals en route to a 2-0 victory on Sunday, Chapman rattled SMU for three goals in the game's first 20 minutes and held off a late Cardinals' rally for a 4-3 victory on Monday.
Playing the role of the ungracious host, the Panthers didn't even let SMU get comfortable its surroundings before attacking as Scott Ross scored nine minutes into the game and Brock Schermerhorn added two more before the first half was even half over.
Joe Rude (Eau Claire, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board at the 24-minute mark, converting on a penalty kick, and the score remained 3-1 the rest of the first half.
Unlike the first half, when Chapman needed nine minutes to get on the score board, the Cardinals were the ones quick out of the gate in the second half as Eric Brown (Cary, Ill.) scored the first of his two goals just four minutes into the half to cut the lead to 3-2.
Three minutes later, it was Chapman's turn, as Tony Ferrari beat SMU goalie Matt Peck (Eau Claire, Wis.) to give the Panthers a two-goal cushion — which proved to be just enough cushion, thanks to Brown's second goal of the game at the 75-minute mark.
The loss was the second straight and sixth in the last seven games for the Cardinals (6-8-1 overall), while Chapman won for the fifth straight time in evening their record at 7-7-0.
