Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — Heading into Wednesday's nonconference game against Rockford, Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Eric Luzzi knew if his team was going to be successful, they would have to shut down the Regents' J.J. Tews.
They did.
Problem was, Tews wasn't the only high-scoring forward Rockford had, as Kyle Truax scored three goals to lead the Regents to a 4-2 victory over SMU, handing the Cardinals their third straight loss.
Truax opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark, but the Cardinals responded with two goals of their own — the first an own goal by the Regents and the second off the foot of Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.), who beat Rockford goalie Jason Cockfield from point-blank range for his sixth goal of the season.
From there, however, it was all Rockford as Truax and Adedeji Famodu beat SMU goalkeeper Bob Endemann (Woodridge, Ill.) before the first half ended, and Truax completed his hat trick with just under four minutes remaining in the second half.
Endemann, making his second start in goal, finished with nine saves for the Cardinals (5-4-1). Cockfield stopped 11 shots for the Regents (8-2-1).
