Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — Eric Luzzi isn't much of a movie buff, but if he were, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach would most certainly own multiple copies of the movie Groundhog Day.
After all, that movie's plot — Bill Murray stuck reliving the same day over and over and over — is a mirror image of what Luzzi and the Cardinals have gone through for the past five weeks.
The only difference is, unlike the movie, the Cardinals get to face a new opponent with each game they play. Other than that, it's the Cardinals reliving the same scenario over and over and over … .
"I hate to keep sounding like a broken record, but I don't have anything new to say — every game it's the same thing," said Luzzi, whose team dropped its fourth straight game Wednesday with a 1-0 loss to St. Olaf. "It's almost like we're jinxed or something — every bounce, every break, just seems to go against us."
After battling to a 0-0 tie through the first 45 minutes, St. Olaf got a break just over a minute into the second half when Mark Gilmer's corner kick bounced free to an uncovered Trevor Davies, who drilled a shot past SMU goalie Matt Peck (Eau Claire, Wis.) for the game's only goal.
"We created a number of great scoring opportunities," Luzzi said. "But either the ball would bounce away from our guy, or it would skip off the cross bar, or would just miss wide. It's like, no matter how hard we try, we can't get the ball in the net."
Peck, who along with Michael Kroll (Cary, Ill.), Eric Brown (Cary, Ill.), Joe Rude (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Ned Colleran (Chicago, Ill.), will be playing in his final collegiate soccer game when SMU plays host to Macalester on Saturday, finished with eight saves.
