Concordia's offense too much for Cardinals

Game Summary

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Eric Luzzi must be feeling like his first season as the Cardinals' head coach is nothing more than a rollercoaster ride — and Luzzi hates rollercoasters.

The Cardinals, who completed the climb to the tallest peak in the ride with an impressive 5-1-1 record through its first seven games, have come crashing back down to earth at warp speed over the last four, going 0-4 — including a 4-0 loss to Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday.

The Cardinals, who have been outscored 12-4 during their recent four-game losing streak, never got their offense on track against the Cobbers, managing eight shots on goal, but failing to convert on any of them. Concordia, meanwhile, fired 11 shots on SMU goalie Bob Endemann (Woodridge, Ill.), and scored on four.

Brandon Topp gave Concordia (3-2-0 MIAC, 5-5-1 overall) all the offense it would need when he beat Endemann at the 21:56 mark. Dustin Allard would net the first of his two goals less than 12 minutes later as the Cobbers took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break — marking the fourth straight game that the Cardinals have found themselves trying to dig out of a two-goal deficit.

Jason Van Valkenburg made it 3-0 early in the second half and Allard added his second of the afternoon with eight minutes remaining to round out the scoring. Cobber goalkeeper Kris Overby made eight saves for the shutout.
