WINONA, Minn. — Eric Lindquist's game plan was simple for his Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams: If opportunity knocks, answer it.

And that's just what the Cardinals did.

SMU wasn't able to get the seven-year dual-meet monkey off its back when it comes to swimming against Gustavus, but the Cardinals did manage to turn a few heads during Saturday's meet at the Jul Gernes Pool.

"Going into the meet, I was concerned that it was going to be a nerve-wracking meet," admitted Lindquist, referring to the fact that Saturday's competition was the Cardinals' season-opener. "But it turned out to be a showcase of confidence and solid, smart swimming.

"This was the first collegiate meet for a lot of our swimmers, and yet they swam like veterans," continued Lindquist, whose teams have never beaten the Gusties in their eight years of varsity competition as the men's team dropped a 130-84 decision to the Gusties, while the women came out on the short end of a 139-80 decision. "We knew going into the meet that we weren't going to be able to win every event — but our thoughts were to make sure when we had a chance (to win), we didn't let that chance slip out of our grasp."

They didn't.

Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) led the Cardinals men's team, placing first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58:18, then teaming with Ben Chastek (St. Paul, Minn.), Kyle Van Lith (Appleton, Wis.) and Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.63. Schultz also added a second in the 200 IM (2:14.30), while Van Lith was second in the 50 freestyle (23.43), Gibson was second in the 100 freestyle (52.63), Chastek was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.99) and Jeremy Stark (Albuquerque, N.M.) was second in one-meter diving (123.05).

On the women's side, the Cardinals' got a pair of first-place efforts from Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska), as the junior stopped the clock first in both the 500 (5:53.63) and the 1,000 free (12:14.31). Freshman Lindsay Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis.), one of those "rookies" swimming in her first collegiate meet, finished .79 off the school record en route to her second-place finish in the 50 free (26.53), while SMU also got second-place efforts from Leah Moen (Wyoming, Minn.) in the one-meter and three-meter diving (167.90 / 144.45), and Jennifer Phillips (Red Wing, Minn.) in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.03).

"Overall, I was very pleased with our performance," said Lindquist. "We wanted to go out there and swim to the best of our abilities, and there's no question we did that."
