WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team's season-opening winning streak came to a screeching halt Saturday evening as UW-Superior handed the Cardinals a 5-1 nonconference setback in a nonconference game at the SMU Ice Arena.
The Yellowjackets scored with just 1:20 remaining in the opening period on a goal by Randal Smisko, then added a pair of goals in both the second and third periods en route to the victory.
Trailing 4-0 midway through the third period, SMU finally got on the board as Eric Thom (Portland, Ore.) took a pass from Mark Zoller (Rochester, Minn.) and beat Superior goalie Nathan Ziemski for his second tally of the season.
Dave Rogalski (St. Louis Park, Minn.) suffered the loss in goal for the Cardinals, despite stopping 27 of the 32 shots he faced. Ziemski finshed with 13 saves for the Yellowjackets.
