Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team saw one trend continue and another disappear Wednesday evening in their nonconference battle with cross-town rival Winona State.

The Cardinals came into Wednesday's matchup averaging 87.5 points a game. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that was an early-season trend that came to a screeching halt against the NCAA Division II Warriors, as SMU managed to put ;just 64 points on the board.

The Warriors, on the other hand, erupted for 94 points — marking the third straight game an SMU opponent has scored 90 or more points — as Winona State rolled to a 94-64 victory.

Jamie Carrier led a quartet of WSU players in double figures with a game-high 20 points, including a 5-for-7 performance from beyond the 3-point line. Justin Redetzke chipped in four 3-pointers en route to his 17 points, while Travis Leech added 16 points and Jason Linzmeier tallied 14 for WSU.

Jason Dzick (Duluth, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals (0-3 overall), scoring 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting, whle Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Ryan Wilt (Naperville, Ill.) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Cardinals struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 7 of 26 field goal attempts — including just 1 of 9 from beyond the arc — and went into the locker room at the half staring at a 41-22 deficit.

Things didn't get much better in the second half as Winona State shot a blistering 56.3 percent from the field and outscored the Cardinals 53-42.
