Game Summary

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The end result may have been the same, but this time around, the Saint Mary's Unviersity men's hockey team was in control from the very beginning.

For the second straight night, the Cardinals handed Hamline a 5-2 setback Saturday evening, but, unlike Friday's season-opener — in which SMU found itself staring at a 2-1 deficit after the game's first 20 minutes — the Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 advantage through two periods and held on for the victory.

Jason Fillipp (Fox River Grove, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinals (2-0-0 MIAC, 2-0-0 overall), scoring two goals, while Peter Benecke (St. Louis, Mo.), Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) and B.J. Gaustad (Portland, Ore.) also scored for SMU.

Benecke and Fillipp both beat Hamline goalie Jason Harstad in the first period as SMU raced to a 2-0 advantage. Gaustad, the hero of Friday's win with two goals and an assist, made it 3-0 midway through the second period, and Schumacher and Fillipp sandwiched their third-period goals between goals by the Pipers' Brendan Roache and B.J. Anderson to round out the scoring.

Dave Rogalski (St. Louis, Park, Minn.) picked up the win in goal for SMU, stopping 36 of 38 shots in his collegiate debut.
