Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — For 63 minutes, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team dominated its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with St. Olaf, outshooting the Oles 41-25 during that span.
In those other two minutes, however, the Oles made their shots count as Chad Zwerdling and Wally Cisweski scored 23 seconds apart midway through the first period as the Oles and Cardinals battled to a 2-2 tie Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
"That was a great hockey game," said SMU coach Don Olson, whose team moved to 2-0-1 in the MIAC and 6-1-1 overall with the tie. "I thought we played very well, as did (St. Olaf). Their goalie (Garret Hasti) was tough to beat tonight."
Nick Meeker (Rochester, Minn.) put the Cardinals on the board first, banging home a rebound off the stick of Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) at the 9:26 mark of the opening period.
Zwerdling and Cisweski, however, gave the Oles a 2-1 advantage with their back-to-back goals. SMU appeared to have the game-tying goal late in the second stanza, but Ryan Holland's (Winona, Minn.) goal was waved off by the officials.
With St. Olaf clinging to their one-goal advantage — and Hasti kicking out everything the Cardinals through at him through two-and-a-half periods — the Cardinals finally broke through at the 11:46 mark of the third period as Colin Emans (Hutchinson, Minn.) scored his second of the season on assists from Todd Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) and Holland.
Saint Mary's had the upper hand in the five-minute overtime, outshooting St. Olaf 7-1, but the Oles' one shot was a near-disaster for SMU as Dan Norstan rifled a shot that clanked off the cross bar.
Eric Richardson (Skokie, Ill.) remained unbeaten in four starts in goal for SMU, as the senior stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.
