WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams got a got a lesson in what it takes to be among the top teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Friday afternoon.

And St. Olaf was more than happy to do the teaching.

The Oles, winners of 20 straight MIAC men's team titles and 11 of the last 12 MIAC women's crowns, cruised to dual-meet wins over the out-matched Cardinals at the Jul Gernes Pool. St. Olaf posted a 158-67 win over the SMU men's team, while the Cardinal women's team was handed a 155-63 setback.

"It was a good meet for us, and it was a bad meet for us," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist. "We had some very good swims, and we had some not-so-good swims. St. Olaf is an awfully tough team, and they proved today whey they are the cream of the (MIAC) crop."

Lindquist was impressed by the performances of several SMU swimmers, including Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) in the 100 backstroke (2nd, 57.10), Kyle Van Lith (Appleton, Wis.) in the 100 freestyle (2nd, 51.20), Lindsay Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis.) and Lindsey DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) in the 100 freestyle (2nd, 58.47 and 4th, 59.50, respectively) and Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) in the 1000 freestyle (3rd, 12:12.09).

"This was a good learning experience," Lindquist said. "Hopefully we can learn a thing or two from this meet and continue to improve as the season progresses."
