WINONA, Minn. — Duncan Ryhorchuk vowed that his Saint Mary's University women's hockey team would rebound from Friday's season-opening loss to UW-Superior in a big way.
And he was right.
Led by Tasa Kostel's (Rochester, Minn.) two goals and the goaltending of Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.), the Cardinals bounced back from that 5-2 loss on Friday with a 6-4 triumph Sunday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.
But it wasn't easy.
The Yellowjackets grabbed a 1-0 lead 2 minutes into the first period on Jodi Faye's second goal of the series, but SMU got the equalizer on Jaimie Mussehl's (South St. Paul, Minn.) first collegiate goal at the 15:24 mark of the opening period.
UW-Superior regained the lead in the first three minutes of the second period as Kelsey Pew — the hero of Friday's win with two goals — netted her third of the season. Kostel tallied the first of her two goals at the 9:53 mark to pull SMU even, and Diane Amsden (North St. Paul, Minn.) gave the Cardinals their first lead of the 2001-2002 season just 42 seconds later.
But Superior wasn't about to roll over and play dead, as the Yellowjackets tied the game on Jennifer Ginkel's goal with 3:03 remaining in the second period. Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) and Alissa Schultz (LeSueur, Minn.) sandwiched goals around UW-Superior's Melanie Salatino's goal in the first 10 minutes of the final period, and Kostel iced the victory with her second goal, an empty-netter, with 1:03 remaining.
Meemken finished with 42 saves in evening her record at 1-1-0.
