Game Summary
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team peppered the St. Olaf net with 41 shots, but had only two goals to show for their efforts in Friday's 2-2' tie.
And through the first period of Saturday evening's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rematch, it looked like more of the same as SMU managed just one goal — despite peppering the Ole goal with 17 shots.
That's when the Cardinals put their foot down — enough was enough.
The Cardinals erupted for three second-period goals — on just 10 shots — and added another goal in an 11-shot third period as SMU posted a key 4-3 victory over the Oles.
Justin Brigl (Apple Valley, Minn.) opened the scoring for the Cardinals (3-0-1 MIAC, 7-1-1 overall) just 1:47 into the opening period. Dana Quinn knotted the game at 1-1 midway through the period and St. Olaf goalie Jake Bullard stopped 16 of SMU's 17 shots as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie through the game's opening 20 minutes.
SMU took control in the second period as Brian Murphy (St. Paul, Minn.), Lenny Hofmann (Sartell, Minn.) and Eric Thom (Portland, Ore.) scored unanswered goals in a four-minute span to give the Cardinals what appeared to be a commanding 4-1 advantage.
The Oles' Dan Norsten netted a powerplay goal midway through the second period and Jordan Bronce pulled St. Olaf within one, 4-3, five minutes into the the third period. That was as close as the Oles would get however, as SMU goalie Dave Rogalski (St. Louis Park, Minn.) stopped 13 third-period shots and 30 of St. Olaf's 33 to preserve the victory.
