Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — It certainly wasn't easy, but the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team completed its two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of Augsburg Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.
Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) stopped all 27 shots she faced and Tennie McCabe (Rochester, Minn.) scored the game's only goal midway through the third period as the Cardinals beat the Auggies 1-0.
"It's always great to win, but I sure would like to see us win a little more convincingly," admitted SMU coach Duncan Ryhorchuk, whose team opened the series vs. Augsburg with a 2-1 win Friday evening in Minneapolis, Minn. "But just like (Friday night), everyone got into the game, and everyone made a contribution, which is imiportant.
"We knew this was an important series for us, and the bottom line is, no matter what the scores were, we came away with two wins."
Thanks in large part to the play of Meemken.
The Cardinals' junior All-American netminder stopped stopped 54 of the 55 shots she faced in the two games vs. the Auggies, including all 27 en route to her second shutout in the last three games on Saturday.
"Take away the first game of the year (a 5-2 loss to UW-Superior), and Missie's been outstanding," said Ryhorchuk. "She has just picked up where she left off a year ago (when she led the Cardinals to a national-tournament appearance and earned all-tournament honors)."
Meemken and Augsburg goalie Katie Fedoryk waged their own battle through the first two periods, with Meemken kciking out all 20 Augsburg shots, while Fedoryk returned the favor by blanking SMU on its first 25 shots.
McCabe finally broke through at the 5:54 mark of the third period, taking a pass from Allisa Schultz (LeSueur, Minn.) and breaking in alone on Fedoryk. The Cardinal sophomore and reigning MIAC Player of the Year faked left and went right, rifling a shot into the upper corner, just out of Fedoryk's outstretched glove.
"Augsburg has a very good team and they played very well all weekend," praised Ryhorchuk. "Hopefully these two wins will give us some momentum (heading into next weekend's key showdown with MIAC leader Gustavus)."
