ST. PAUL, Minn. — It wasn't their best, but it's a win just the same.
The Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team, fueled by the first-place finishes of
Kyle Van Lith (Appleton, Wis.) and
Ben Chastek (St. Paul, Minn.), the Cardinals cruised to a 155-53 win over Hamline Saturday afternoon.
The SMU women weren't quite as fortunate, howver, as the Pipers swam away with a 182-93 win.
"It was a good meet," understated Lindquist. "To finally pick up that first dual meet win is nice — everyone's been working so hard all season, to get a win shows that all that work is paying off."
Van Lith led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Cardinals in the 100 freestyle, as the junior touched the wall in 52.62, just ahead of
Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill. / 53.39) and
Anthony Gruenke (Chicago, Ill. / 55.22).
Van Lith and Gruenke also went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, with Van Lith stopping the clock in 23.42, with Gruenke touching in 24.58. Chastek picked up his first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, where he clocked a time of 1:08.82, just ahead of teammate
Steve Sadorf (Chicago, Ill.), who placed second in 1:08.85.
"Our men really swam a great race," praised Lindquist. "Our times weren't personal-bests, but they certainly were season-bests, and that's what we are looking for right now, to get faster with each meet (leading up to the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships)."
Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Lindsey Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis.) each had a hand in two of the three first-place finishes for the SMU women, as Andre touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle (5:45.97), then teamed with Salisbury, Rebecca Grobe (Appleton, Wis.) and Abby Huot (Lake Elmo, Minn.) to win the 400 medley relay (4:36.98). Salisbury's other first came in the 50 freestyle, where she posted a time of 27.27, finishing just in front of teammate Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn. / 27.71). Leah Moen (Wyoming, Minn.) turned in her best performance of the season in the diving competition, placing second in both the 1-meter (150 points) and the 3-meter (161.60).
"Our times were perfect, but I was very happy with the performances," said Lindquist, whose team is now off until mid-January, when they travel to Macalester for another MIAC dual meet. "To go into the (Christmas) break getting that first dual-meet win, and having everyone swim well, that's great."
