WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak and perfect record in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference go up in smoke with a 74-72 loss to Gustavus Saturday afternoon.
But, rather than let that defeat prove to be a roadblock in their drive to the top of the conference heap, the Cardinals treated that loss as nothing more than a speed bump as SMU rode the hot shooting to Stacy Hammel (Manitowoc, Wis.) and Alissa Erichsen (Spring Valley, Minn.) to a 69-58 victory over Concordia Sunday afternoon at theSMU gym.
Hammel scored a game-high 24 points and Erichsen added 20 as the Cardinals won for the fourth time in their last five games, pushing their MIAC record to 4-1 and their overall mark to 6-2.
The Cardinals struggled early, shooting just 39 percent in the first half, and found themselves trailing 33-32 at the opening 20 minutes. SMU turned up the heat in the second half, however, shooting 43 percent from the field, while outscoring the visiting Cobbers 37-25 to ice the win.
Mandy Pearson netted 18 points and Kasey Bostow and Mandy Berggren added 15 and 12 points, respectively in the losing effort for Concordia (2-2 MIAC, 2-4 overall).
