WINONA, Minn. — Laura Haugen scored 18 points to lead a trio of Gustavus players in double figures as the Gusties raced out to a 14-point halftime advantage and cruised to a 78-58 MIAC victory over the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team Thursday evening at the SMU gym.
Jenny Gilles (Keizer, Ore.) scored a game-high 20 points in the losing effort for the Cardinals (6-8 MIAC, 7-10 overall), who lost for the second straight night.
Gustavus shot 46 percent (13-for-28) from the field and were 12-for-18 from the free throw in the first half in building their 38-24 advantage at the intermission. The Cardinals, meanwhile, struggled from the field all night, hitting just 8 of 27 field goal attempts in the first half and 21 of 62 (34 percent) for the game.
Amy Burns (Winona, Minn.) and
Stacy Hammel (Manitowoc, Wis.) each chipped in seven points for the Cardinals, while Kelly Etzel and Tricia Niebuhr tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively, to go with Haugen's team-high 18.
