WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team hit just 1 of 4 free throws in the five-minute overtime period as Carleton escaped with an 82-80 MIAC victory Saturday afternoon at the SMU Gym.
The Cardinals gave the league-leading Knights (16-2 MIAC, 18-3) all they could handle right up to the final buzzer.
Amy Burns (Winona, Minn.) nailed her sixth 3-pointer of the game with 1:30 remaining in OT to give the Cardinals a two-point, 79-77, advantage. Carleton's Angie Grabowski, who equalled Burns' game-high output of 26 points, answered with a pair of free throws to knot the game at 79-79.
Stacy Hammel (Manitowoc, Wis.) hit the second of two free throws to put SMU back on top, 80-79, but the Knights' Renee Willette scored underneath and Lisa Cawley added a free throw to give Carleton its school-record 10th straight win.
Along with Burns' game-high 26 points, SMU also got 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds from Hammel. Karissa Kramer chipped in 14 points for Carleton.
The teams battled to a 37-37 halftime tie, then each scored 33 points in the second half to force the overtime period. It was the first overtime game of the season for either team.
