ST. PAUL, Minn. —
Missy Westergren (Lonsdale, Minn.) scored tthree goals and assisted on another as the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Concordia last Saturday with a 5-2 MIAC win over St. Catherine Wednesday evening.
Still clinging to hopes of a third straight MIAC championship, the Cardinals solidified their grasp of home-ice for the first round of the MIAC playoffs vs. the Wildcats, scoring once in the first period and twice in both the second and third.
Monica Deringer (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) put SMU on top 1-0 at the 17:34 mark of the first period, and
Christy Hicks (Bloomington, Minn.) and Westergren pushed that advantage to 3-0 heading into the game's final 20 minutes. After Katie Eichten cut the lead to 3-1 just 49 seconds into the third period, Westergren sandwiched goals No. 2 and 3 around the Wildcats' second goal to ice the win for the Cardinals (14-3-0 MIAC, 18-5-0 overall).
The same two teams square off again Saturday at Saint Mary's, and could possibly meet again in the first round of the MIAC playoffs. St. Catherine (11-5-1 MIAC, 15-7-2 overall) is currently in third place in the conference.
