WINONA, Minn. — Dan Byron (Edina, Minn.) posted 28 saves and the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team scored three goals in the first period en route to a 4-1 victory over Gustavus Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
The win snapped the Cardinals' 11-game winless streak, and gave SMU its first victory since a 7-6 come-from-behind triumph over UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 5.
Ryan Stinson (Winona, Minn.) opened the scoring for SMU, netting his team-leading 18th goal at the 1:50 mark of the first period. Todd Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) made it 2-0 less than eight minutes later, and Jason Fillipp (Fox River Grove, Ill.) gave the Cardinals a 3-0 cushion when he beat Gustavus goalie Brian McFarlane just 47 seconds after Hangge's goal.
Gustavus cut the lead to two, 3-1, with the second period's lone goal as Josh Kramer beat Byron at the 18:52 mark. Ryan Holland (Winona, Minn.) expanded SMU's lead back to three, 4-1, with his fourth goal of the season midway through the third period.
The Cardinals finished with 33 shots on goal, while converting 2 of 5 powerplay opportunities. Gustavus, meanwhile, was 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
