WINONA, Minn. — St. John's shot 62 percent from the field in the first half, building a 14 points it would never relinquish as the Johnnies locked up the MIAC regular-season title with an 83-54 victory over the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team Saturday afternoon.
The Johnnies, who have now won 13 straight — the school's longest winning streak since SJU won 27 straight during the 1978-79 season — closed out the regular season with a 17-3 MIAC record. The last time SJU won the MIAC title was 1993.
St. John's hit on 18 of 29 first-half field goal attempts, and outscored the Cardinals 12-4 over the final four minutes of the half to take a 44-30 advantage into the locker room at the break.
The Johnnies continued their torrid shooting in the second half, connecting on 11 of 21 field goal attempts (52 percent), and added 13 free throws en route to the lopsided final margin of victory.
Jason Boll (Sauk Prairie, Wis.), playing in his final collegiate game, netted a team-high 12 points for the Cardinals (4-16 MIAC, 5-19 overall), while Tory Parsons (Apple Valley, Minn.) chipped in 10 points. Luke Witt tallied a game-high 21 points and Mike Nesler added 18 for the Johnnies, who also clinched home court advantage throughout the conference's post-season tournament.
