ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — Michelle Barlau scored a game-high 18 points and led four St. Benedict players in double figures as the Blazers rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team 72-66 in the regular-season finale Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals will get a second shot at the Blazers on Monday as the same two teams square off in the first round of the MIAC post-season tournament. SMU (10-11 MIAC, 11-13 overall) is the No. 6 seed, while St. Benedict (18-3, 20-4) is the No. 3 seed.
Amy Burns (Winona, Minn.) tallied a team-high 16 points for the Cardinals, who had their two-game winning streak snapped, while
Jenny Gilles (Keizer, Ore.) chipped in 13 points and
Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) added 12. Andrea Bennett finsihed with 16 points, while Ashley Brown and Danni Hannon each netted 11 for the Blazers.
SMU shot a blistering 54 percent (18-for-33) from the field in the first half to take a 40-32 advantage at the break, but St. Benedict responded with a 14-for-27 performance from the field in the second half, and added 10 of 12 free throws, in outscoring SMU 40-26 over the game's final 20 minutes to seal the win.
