WINONA, Minn. — Winona State swept all singles matches in straight sets en route to an 8-1 nonconference victory over the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team in the Cardinals season opener Monday at the St. T's Tennis and Sports Club.
Christina Tobin (Houston, Texas) and
Keely Nyquist (Orono, Minn.) teamed for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles for the lone SMU victory.
Winona State cruised in the first set of all six singles matches, but then found things a little more difficult in the second set, as
Kim Bennett (Rockwell City, Iowa),
Nicole Hilo (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and
Dena Bing (Cannon Falls, Minn.) all went 7-5 in the second set at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5, while
Emily Strom (Waterford, Wis.) fell 7-6 in the second set at No. 6.
