Laura Wyness (Chicago, Ill.) and
Tennie McCabe (Rochester, Minn.) scored goals eight minutes apart in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and carry the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team to a
4-2 MIAC victory over
Concordia Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
The Cardinals, who pushed their season-high winning streak to nine, dominated the first two periods, outshooting the Cobbers (7-8-0, 11-8-0) 28-4, but they only had a 2-1 lead to show for it.
Sarah Gibbons (Lemont, Ill.) got the Cardinals on the board at the 1:58 mark of the first period, but Concordia responded when Lindsay Kurtis scored on the Cobbers' first shot on goal, beating SMU goalie
Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) on a breakaway at the 14:53 mark.
Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) accounted for the lone goal of the second period, while Concordia's Katie Jacques netting the Cobbers' second breakaway goal of the game 1:59 into the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Wyness put the Cardinals ahead for good, tipping in a shot by
Diane Amsden (North St. Paul, Minn.), while McCabe gave SMU a little breathing room with her team-leading 25th goal midway through the final period.
Meemken finished with eight saves, while Concordia goalie Shyla Wilson recorded 38 saves.
The same two teams square off again Saturday at 2 p.m.
