WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team snapped its season-opening seven-match losing streak in convincing fashion Tuesday afternoon, as the Cardinals cruised to an 8-1 nonconference victory over Northwestern.
SMU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, as
Geoff Granseth (Winona, Minn.),
Brad Reichuber (Mahtomedi, Minn.),
Jason Boll (Sauk Prairie, Wis.),
Chad Boyer (Albert Lea, Minn.) and
John Scheid (Bloomington, Minn.) were all victorious.
"The guys played a good, solid match," said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. "We had a good feeling coming into the match that we were the better team, and the guys went out and proved it on the court."
The Cardinals completed the rout with easy wins in all three doubles matches. Granseth and Reichuber teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1, while the team of Boll and Drew Jackola (Chisholm, Minn.) won 8-0 at No. 2 and Boyer and
Justin Voigt (Red Wing, Minn.) rolled 8-3 at No. 3.
