NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team continued to feast on conference pitching Tuesday as the Cardinals banged out 30 hits en route to a pair of five-inning victories over St. Olaf.
SMU, the defending NCAA Division III national champions, scored all 12 of their Game 1 runs in the first inning in beating the Oles 12-2, then turned around and collected 16 hits and scored in every inning but the second in completing the sweep with a 16-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Cardinals, winners of nine straight, have now won their last four MIAC games by a combined score of 52-4.
Gina Rizzardi (Woodbury, Minn.) led SMU's 14-hit attack in the opener against the Oles, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
Lindsey Smith (Elma, Iowa) was one of three other SMU players with two hits, while also driving in four runs with her two-run double and two-run triple. Ann Munzenmaier (Urbandale, Iowa) was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, and
Niki Lynch (Winona, Minn.) was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
In the nightcap, Munzenmaier was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Cardinals' offensive barrage. Lynch was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while
Jackie Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Jennifer Miller (Winona, Minn.) and
Annie Hovde (Cottage Grove, Minn.) were both 2-for-3.
