Jill Hocking (Apple Valley, Minn.) pitched five no-hit innings in the first game, then went 3-for-3 with four RBs in the second contest, as the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team rolled to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of Augsburg Friday afternoon
The Cardinals, behind Hocking's pitching brilliance, won the opener 4-1, then completed the sweep with a 9-0, five-inning victory, improving their MIAC mark to 7-1 and their overall record to 17-5.
Hocking struck out six, while walking just one — the only baserunner she allowed — in her five innings of work in the first game.
Missy Blaser (Austin, Minn.) pitched the finaly two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Jennifer Meyer (Oconomowoc, Wis.) led the Cardinals' offensive attack in Game 1, going 2-for-3, while driving in two runs and scoring one. Meyer singled in a run in the third inning and hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth.
Lindsey Smith (Elma, Iowa) also went 2-for-3 — lacing a double and a triple in three plate appearances, while Hocking contributed a double and Ann Munzenmaier (Urbandale, Iowa) went 2-for-4 with a triple.
The Cardinals, who extended their season-high winning streak to 11 straight with the sweep, wasted little time taking control in the second game, scoring three times in the top fo the first inning as Meyer and Hocking each had run-scoring triples. Hocking's three-run double to center field and
Jackie Huegel's (Alta Vista, Iowa) run-scoring single capped a four-run third inning that broke the game wide open. The defending NCAA Division III natinal champions added single runs in the fourth and fifth to close out the scoring. Along with Hocking's 3-for-3 performance, the Cardinals also got a second straight 2-for-3 showing for Meyer, who also drove in two runs and scored twice.
Jennifer Gonerka (St. Paul, Minn.) pitched a complete-game, three-hitter in Game 2. The sophomore walked just one and struck out two, while allowing just one Auggie runner to reach third base.
