Game 1 Box Score / Game 2 Box Score
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team managed just one hit off St. Olaf starter Charlie Ruud, but that hit — a one-out double by
David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) — proved to be more than enough as the Cardinals capitalized on five Ole errors en route to a 2-1 victory and a sweep of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
SMU — which moved into a second-place tie with the Oles, one game behind MIAC leader St. Thomas — used a six-run fourth inning — fueled by a two-run double from
Matt Domarus (Woodbury, Minn.) and two more St. Olaf errors — to post the 7-1 victory in Game 1 against the Oles, who had entered the day unbeaten in conference play.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2, without the aid of a hit as
Joe Duda (Rochester, Minn.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning nad scored on a pair of St. Olaf errors. The Oles knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth as Nick Beissel launched a one-out, solo home run off SMU starter
Cory Kanz (Oronoco, Minn.). It was one of six hits the Oles (8-2 MIAC, 15-7) would get off Kanz, who struck out two and walked one in earning the complete-game win.
McMahon started the Cardinals' game-winning rally by belting a one-out double in the sixth. Duda was then intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out.
Rob Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.) lifted a fly ball to right and McMahon tagged and went to third. Duda faked going to second on the play and got caught in a rundown, McMahon broke for home, and when he tried to get back to third, Beissel — St. Olaf's first baseman — threw the ball away, allowing McMahon to score.
The Cardinals found the going a bit easier — but no less bizarre — in winning the opener. Duda's solo home run in the second tied the game at 1-1, then SMU put the game out of reach with its six-run fourth.
Scott Morrison (St. Paul, Minn.) led off the fourth with a walk and moved to third when St. Olaf third baseman Kevin Quame couldn't handle McMahon's hard-hit ground ball for the Oles' first error of the inning. Duda followed with a walk to load the bases and Kimlinger added SMU's third walk of the inning, scoring Morrison.
Brad Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) was awarded first base on a catcher's interference call, scoring McMahon with the Cardinals' second run of the inning. Domarus then laced a two-run double, while a sacrifice fly by Tony Cicallelo (St. Paul, Minn.) and a two-out single by
Greg Setterlund (St. Paul, Minn.) accounted for SMU's other two runs.
Eric Williamson (St. Charles, Minn.) picked up the pitching win, going the complete seven innings, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out four and walking three.
