David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) went 5-for-8 with four RBIs and pitchers
Andy Ebert (Winona, Minn.) and
Joe Duda (Rochester, Minn.) each tossed three hitters as the Saint Mary's University baseball team swept its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with Carleton Tuesday afternoon.
McMahon laced three singles and
Jamie Nowaczewski (St. Paul, Minn.) belted a two-run double in the Cardinals' three-run fifth inning as SMU beat the Knights 5-0 in the opener. McMahon chipped in a 2-for-4 performance in the second game and Duda tossed a complete game as the Cardinals completed the sweep with a second straight 5-0 victory.
In the opener, SMU scored a single run in the fourth inning as McMahon drove in
Scott Morrison (St. Paul, Minn.), who led off the inning with a double. The Cardinals added three more runs in the fourth, with Nowaczewski's double accounting for two of the runs, while Morrison's sacrifice fly accounted for the other. SMU closed out the scoringin the seventh as McMahon drilled a two-out single to score Nowaczewski.
Ebert pitched the first six innings to record his team-leading fourth win of the season, scattering three hits — all singles — while walking two and striking out one.
Chuck Wright (Winona, Minn.) pitched a one-two-three seventh, striking out one.
In the nightcap, McMahon was one of four SMU players with two hits as the Cardinals banged out 11 hits and capitalized on five Carleton errors to post their fourth straight MIAC win and improve to 10-2 in the conference and 12-4 overall.
Along with McMahon's 2-for-4 effort, Nowaczewski was 2-for-2, while Morrison was 2-for-4 and
Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
SMU scored two runs in the first inning on a two-out, two-run triple from McMahon, then added solo runs in the second and third innings — the first on an RBI single by Cicalello and the second on an RBI single by Duda. On the mound, Duda walked one and struck out three in posting his first complete game of the season.
