WINONA, Minn. — Scott Morrison (St. Paul, Minn.) belted a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning as the Saint Mary's University baseball team escaped with a 2-1 victory over Gustavus in the opening game of Thursday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Max Molock Field.

The Cardinals completed the sweep — their third straight MIAC sweep — as Greg Setterlund (St. Paul, Minn.) laced a two-run home run to fuel SMU's five-run second inning en route to a 6-3 victory.

Morrison finished collected a pair of hits in four trips in the first game, driving in SMU's first run with a two-out double to right-center in the fifth inning, then adding his second home run of the season to seal the win in the eighth.

Nick Steig (Osseo, Wis.) picked up the win in relief of starter Eric Williamson (St. Charles, Minn.), getting out of a seventh-inning jam by striking out Tom Ramy with runners on second and third. Steig retired all four batters he faced for his first collegiate win. Williamson went the first 6 2/3, allowing one earned run on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one. Morrison and Jamie Nowaczewski (St. Paul, Minn.) accounted for four of SMU's six hits, with each going 2-for-4.

Williamson and the Cardinals dodged a bullet in the top of the fifth as Joe Thorvig and Tyler Vrieze opened with back-to-back singles. After getting Jack Zelinko on a come-backer to the mound, Williamson struck out Bryant Rogness, intentionally walked Brad Mazer to load the bases, and struck out Erick Hoberg to end the inning.

In Game 2, Gustavus jumped on SMU starter Cory Kanz (Oronoco, Minn.) for a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second, but the Cardinals rebounded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) got SMU on the board with an RBI double, scoring Rob Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.). Back-to-back RBI doubles by Andy Campbell (Omaha, Neb.) and Nowaczewski gave SMU a 3-2 advantage, and Setterlund gave the Cardinals some breathing room with his first home run of the season.

Kanz gave up a solo run in the third, but was in control the rest of the way, finishing with a complete-game eight-hitter to improve to 4-0. The sophomore left-hander did not walk a batter and struck out two.

Setterlund finished with two hits in four at-bats — adding an RBI double in the sixth — while David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) chipped in two hits in three at-bats.
