WINONA, Minn. — Jill Hocking (Apple Valley, Minn.) tossed a one-hit shutout — losing her bid for a no-hitter with two out in the seventh — and Jennifer Gonerka (St. Paul, Minn.) added a five-hit shutout as the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team extended its winning streak to 19 with a sweep of St. Catherine — 2-0 and 8-0 — in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Hocking cruised through the first six innings in the opener, allowing only one base-runner — a lead-off walk in the second inning. In the seventh, Kelly Guiden reached on a one-out error by SMU shortstop Jackie Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) and advanced to second on a fly-out to center field. Beth Janni then laced a single to center, but Guiden was caught in a rundown between third and home, ending the inning.

SMU scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the fourth as Hocking led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Huegel, advanced to third on a groundout by Lindsey Smith (Elma, Iowa) and scored on Gina Rizzardi's (Woodbury, Minn.) RBI single. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the fifth when Ann Munzenmaier (Urbandale, Iowa) scored on an error. Munzenmaier finished with two hits in four at-bats to lead the SMU charge, while Hocking chipped in a 2-for-3 effort and Jennifer Miller (Winona, Minn.) was 1-for-1.

The Cardinals' offense came to life in the nightcap, collecting 13 hits — including two each from Jennifer Meyer (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Rizzardi and Annie Hovde (Cottage Grove, Minn.). SMU scored two runs in each of the first two innings, then added three more in the fifth — fueled by Meyer's team-leading third home run — and one in the sixth.
