WSU rides 8-run 8th to win in slugfest

WINONA, Minn. — Winona State scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 9-9 tie and carry the Warriors to a 17-10 nonconference win over the Saint Mary's University baseball in a nine-inning game Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 5-1 after one inning, the Cardinals battled back, scoring three times in the top of the second to cut the lead to 5-4. WSU responded with single runs in the second and third to push its advantage to 7-4, but again the Cardinals retaliated, scoring five times in the top of the seventh to take a short-lived, 9-7 advantage. The Warriors (13-4 overall) tied the game with two in the seventh, then iced the win with their eight-run eighth inning.

Brad Huegel (Alta Vista, Iowa) paced the Cardinals' 18-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Matt Domarus (Woodbury, Minn.) also had a home run and was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jamie Nowaczewski (St. Paul, Minn.) and Scott Morrison (St. Paul, Minn.) also chipped in three hits.
