ST. PAUL, Minn. — Home runs were the order of the day Sunday afternoon as the Saint Mary's University baseball team and Hamline combined for six round-trippers in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Hamline belted three solo shots off SMU pitcher
Andy Ebert (Winona, Minn.) en route to a 3-2 victory in the opening game, while SMU's
Matt Domarus (Woodbury, Minn.),
Scott Morrison (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Joe Duda (Rochester, Minn.) all hit homers in the Cardinals' 4-2 Game 2 victory.
The Game 1 loss, which marked the first time all season SMU has lost back-to-back games (the Cardinals had lost the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against St. Thomas), also knocked the Cardinals out of the MIAC title hunt. SMU must now wait until the remainder of the MIAC teams complete their conference schedule Monday to find out who they will play in the opening round of the MIAC tournament next Friday in Northfield, Minn.
Hamline jumped on Ebert with a pair of home runs in the second inning, but SMU tied the score with two runs of its own in the fourth.
Greg Setterlund (St. Paul, Minn.) and Morrison led off the inning with back-to-back walks and a walk to
Rob Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.) loaded the bases for Duda, who laced a two-run single. Hamline iced the win in the bottom of the fourth, however, on its third solo HR of the game.
SMU turned the tables on the Pipers in Game 2, getting a one-out home run from Domarus in the second and back-to-back two-out HRs from Morrison and Duda in the third.
Andy Campbell's (Omaha, Neb.) two-out double in the fourth sealed the win for the Cardinals (16-4 MIAC, 18-6 overall).
