ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University volleyball team has always prided itself on its serve reception.
Bethel, however, must not have been too impressed, as the Royals served up 16 aces en route to a 3-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening.
"We're usually a very good passing team, but we certainly weren't (against Bethel)," admitted SMU coach Mike Lester, whose team dropped to 1-1 in the MIAC and 3-7 overall. "They are a very good team. They have two extremely good outside hitters and, obviously with 16 aces, they served the ball very well."
Tracy Koertgen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, collecting 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Koertgen hit a team-leading .423 (15-for-26) and chipped in eight digs, while Dingels also added four blocks. Maisa Rouzer (Comstock, Wis.) finished with a team-high 10 digs, and Melissa Cowan (Algonquin, Ill.) dished out 38 assists.
