Game Summary
ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team scored as many goals Wednesday as the Cardinals had scored in their first seven games combined — two.
Problem is, the Cardinals' defense surrendered nearly as many goals in Wednesday's game against Gustavus as they had all season, as the Gusties scored five second-half goals en route to a 6-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
The Cardinals (0-2-1 MIAC, 1-5-2 overall), who hadn't scored a goal since the second half of their first game of the season on Sept. 2, wasted little time getting on the board against the Gusties as Kelli Mooney (Maple Grove, Minn.) netted her first collegiate goal just 54 seconds into the game. The Gusties tied the game late in the half as Tiffany Alstead netted the first of her three goals.
Both teams came out for the second half flying high as Alstead scored her second and SMU's Bernadette Balla (Barrington, Ill.) netted her first of the season before the second half was even three minutes old. From there, however, it was all Gustavus (2-1-0 MIAC, 4-4-0 overall). Michelle Kurtz scored three straight goals in a nine-minute span and Alstead completed her hat trick at the 86:57 mark.
The Gusties pelted SMU goalkeeper Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) with 28 shots, while SMU's only two shots on GAC goalie Linnea Carlson found the back of the net.
