KENOSHA, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team experienced first-hand what the Cardinals' first two opponents must have felt like as Carthage handed SMU its first loss of the season, 3-0 Saturday afternoon.
After not allowing a goal in their first two games (a 2-0 win over Viterbo and a 0-0 tie with UW-La Crosse, the Cardinals gave up three first-half goals en route to the nonconference loss.
Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) took the loss in goal, stopping seven of the 10 Carthage shots.
The Cardinals struggled to generate any offense against unbeaten Carthage, managing just two shots on goal. Carthage, meanwhile, peppered O'Hearn wtih 16 shots — including 12 in the first half.
Cassie Schwanger opened the scoring for Carthage (3-0), and in a span of the next 20 minutes, Shelly Hecht and Jackie Bernek had also beaten O'Hearn to give Carthage a commanding 3-0 first-half advantage.
