NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Before his team boarded the bus for last Friday's conference dual with Carleton, Saint Mary's Unviersity swimming and diving coach
Eric Lindquist brushed up a bit on his history.
The Cardinals head coach looked back at how his Cardinals had fared in the past against the Knights, and, unfortunately, what he learned was this was one meet SMU traditionally didn't fare well in.
And, with a quick glance at the final scores, it would be safe to assume this year was no different as Carleton rolled to a 78-33 win over the Cardinal men, then hammered the Cardinal women 99-12.
Talk to Lindquist, however, and you'd think the Cardinals were the ones on the winning side of the final score.
"This may have been the best I have seen us swim (against Carleton) in all the years I've been coaching here," said Lindquist. "Sure, it's hard to ignore the final scores — and give credit to Carleton, they are very, very tough this year — but from my viewpoint, this was a very successful meet for us."
Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) led the way for the Cardinals, picking up SMU's lone first-place finish with a time of 55.54 in the 100 backstroke. The SMU junior also tallied a second-place effort in the 400 IM (4:56.83), while
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn. / 1,650 freestyle, 19:05.95),
Ben Chastek (St. Paul, Minn. / 100 breaststroke, 1:07.36) and
Kyle Van Lith (Appleton, Wis.) / 500 freestyle, 23.44) also pitched in a second-place showings.
Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill. / 100 freestyle, 52.00 and 50 freestyle, 23.67) Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis. / 100 butterfly, 1:03.53),
Steve Sadorf (Chicago, Ill. / 100 breaststroke, 1:08.53) and
Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill. / 1,650 freestyle, 19:27.73) added third-place finishes.
On the women's side, Heidi Andre (Anchorage, Alaska) led the Cardinals' charge, placing third in the 500 freestyle (5:45.47) and fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (19:49.87), Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) added a third in the 100 freestyle (1:00.52) and Erikka Voelz (Pulaski, Wis.) was third in the 200 freestyle (2:20.69), while DeLaRosby (50 freestyle, 26.94), Abby Huot (Lake Elmo, Minn. / 100 freestyle, 1:05.21), Rebecca Grobe (Appleton, Wis. / 100 backstroke, 1:13.55), Lindsey Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis. / 500 freestyle, 3:48.19) and Jennifer Phillips (Red Wing, Minn. / 200 freestyle, 2:27.71) all added fourth-place efforts.
"All we've been doing since mid-December is training, training, training, so it was good for us to get in the pool and swim against someone other than ourselves," said Lindquist. "Obviously our focus is still on making sure we are at our peak in February (for the MIAC Championships), but I liked what I saw in this meet and I think we are farther along than I had thought we'd be."
