Game Summary
ST. PAUL, Minn. — After scoring just one goal in Saint Mary's University's first 15 games, Todd Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) erupted for three goals in the Cardinals' 6-2 men's hockey victory over St. Thomas Friday night.
Hangge's magic touch continued when the two teams squared off against Saturday, as the Cardinal junior netted a pair of goals.
This time, however, it wasn't quite enough as the Tommies used a three-goal third period to beat the Cardinals 4-2 and earn a split in their two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series.
"We didn't play poorly, but we didn't play as well as we did Friday, either," admitted SMU coach Don Olson, whose team had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. "We came out fired up the first period (which ended in a 0-0 tie, despite SMU outshooting the Tommies 11-2), but we lost some of our intensity in the second and third periods."
Jake Searles broke the scoreless tie 15 minutes into the second period, banging a Tony Lawrence rebound past SMU goalie Eric Richardson (Skokie, Ill.).
The Cardinals got the equalizer less than four minutes into the third period as Hangge knocked home his own rebound past UST goalie Bob Tallarico. From there, however, the Tommies' power play took over, as UST netted three straight man-advantage goals — one by Lawrence, one by Dave DuGord and one by Dax Leepart — in a span of just over four minutes to put the game out of reach.
Hangge netted his second of the game — and fifth of the series — with 53 seconds remaining in regulation, but it was too little, too late.
"We hurt ourselves with penalties in the third period," said Olson, whose team was whistled for four third-period penalties. "St. Thomas has got a very good power play, and to give them that many opportunities was just too much."
