Cardinals turn up heat in beating Wildcats

Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — If there's one thing the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team has proven over the past four games, it's that they have just two temperatures — hot and cold.

When they're cold, they're frigid — like in the Cardinals' 24-point loss to Concordia on Jan. 12 and their 35-point setback at St. Benedict on Jan. 16.

But when they're hot, they're sizzling — like in SMU's 24-point win over Macalester on Jan. 14 and they've most recent triumph, a 12-point victory over St. Catherine on Saturday.

Problem is, SMU coach Kim Fierke doesn't know which end of the heating scale her team is going to be one from one day to the next.

Two days after getting blown out by Concordia, the Cardinals hammer Macalester. Then they follow that impressive offensive display up with a lackluster effort against St. Benedict, only to come back with a solid showing again Saturday against the Wildcats.

Jaimie Lee (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored a game-high 15 points, while Alissa Erichsen (Spring Valley, Minn.) netted 15 to lead the Cardinals, but the most impressive offensive performance came from Kristin Jakacki (South St. Paul, Minn.), who recorded her first career double-double with an 11-point, 11-rebound performance.

The Cardinals, who shot 34 percent from the field in the first half, led by four, 33-29 at the break, before tallying 45 second-half points en route to their ninth conference win of the season.
