Game Summary

LA CROSSE, Wis. — After struggling to score more than 50 points in each of its last three games, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team finally got its offense back on track Monday evening, netting 58 points against Viterbo.

Unfortunately, 58 points still wasn't enough, as Viterbo handed the Cardinals their fifth straight loss, 66-58.

"I thought our kids did a nice job," said SMU coach Bob Biebel, whose team fell to 3-12 overall. "Offensively we did a better job, but we still missed a ton of inside baskets. If we're able to convert some of those shots into points … I think it would have been a different story."

It might have helped if the Cardinals weren't staring at a 13-point deficit with just over 13 minutes remaining, too. In the span of seven minutes, the Cardinals had nearly climbed out of that 13-point hole, pulling within two, 48-46 on a basket by Jon Skalski (Cary, Ill.). But a basket by Mike Glass and a 3-pointer by Vince Ruger pushed the lead back to 53-46. Glass then poured in nine of his game-high 25 over the final 4:30 to seal the win for the V-Hawks (8-15 overall).

Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) scored 22 points and added nine rebounds to lead the Cardinals, who trailed 29-26 at the half. Skalski added 10 points for SMU, while Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in nine. Along with Glass' 25, Aaron Bennet and Mike Brudos tallied 11 points each for the V-Hawks.
