ST. PAUL, Minn. — If you break down Saturday's MIAC dual meet between the Saint Mary's University and Macalester swimming and diving teams on an individual basis, the Cardinals more than held their own.

The Cardinals' Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Lindsey Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis.) each won two events, equalling the doubles by Macalester's Lisa Lendway and Liz Fitzgerald.

On the men's side, Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.), Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) and Steve Sadorf (Chicago, Ill.) all raced to first-place finishes.

Problem is, a dual meet isn't determined solely by strong individual performances. Depth is the key — and Macalester had it, while the Cardinals didn't.

The Scots' depth proved to be too much as Macalester rolled to a 116-103 win over the SMU men, the nailed down a 115-75 triumph over the Cardinal women.

Andre picked up wins in the 400 (5:05.83) and 800 freestyle (10:35.0), while Salisbury touched the wall first in both the 50 (29.78) and 100 freestyle (1:05.81). Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn. / 100 freestyle, 1:08.25) and Dianna Kyllo (Kasson, Minn. / 1-meter diving, 146.60; 3-meter diving, 144.65), pitched in second-place finishes, while DeLaRosby (50 freestyle,.30.37) and Jennifer Phillips (Red Wing, Minn. / 200 breaststroke, 3:15.21) both finished third.

On the men's side, Schultz and Gibson both spearheaded one-two Cardinal finishes, as Schultz and Devin Siguliusky (Muscatine, Iowa) clocked times of 2:25.11 and 2:49.59, respectively to go 1-2 in the 200 backstroke, while Sadorf and Ben Chastek (St. Paul, Minn.) were 1-2 in the 200 breastroke with times of 2:48.37 and 2:50.83, respectively.

Logan Twedt (Winona, Minn.) placed second in both the 400 (4:41.46) and 800 freestyle (9:51.4), while Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill. / 800 freestyle, 10:02.67) and Anthony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis. / 200 freestyle, 2:13.79) each tallied third-place performances.
