Game Summary

ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team picked the wrong time to get stuck in the midst of their first two-game losing streak of the season.

Gustavus rallied from 10 points down in the second half to post a 59-54 win over the Cardinals in a key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturrday afternoon.

The Cardinals, who were unbeaten following a loss, entered Saturday's game having dropped a 65-42 decision against St. Olaf last Wednesday. Unfortunately, SMU wasn't able to make it a perfect 6-for-6 as the Gusties outscored SMU 21-6 over the final 9:37 of the second half to snap a two-game losing streak and hand the Cardinals their third loss in their last four games.

The Cardinals held a four-point, 30-26 advantage at the half, and built their lead to 10, 48-38 with 9:37 remaining in regulation — and then the roof caved in. Gustavus finally regained the advantage, 52-51, with 2:55 remaining. The Gusties' lead ballooned to six, 57-51, before Jaimie Lee (Eden Prairie, Minn.) drilled a 3-pointer to pull SMU within 57-54 with 54 seconds remaining. SMU forced a turnover on the Gusties' next possession, but a 3-point attempt by Amy Burns (Winona, Minn.) missed the mark and GAC's Kristin Kachelmyer hit two free throws to ice the win.

Lee and Beth Walch (Altura, Minn.) each scored 10 pointrs for the Cardinals (9-6 MIAC, 11-7 overall), who would have pulled into a fourth-place tie with the Gusties with a victory. Angie Peterson netted a game-high 16 points and Kelly Etzel added 12 for the Gusties (11-4 MIAC, 12-6 overall), who swept the season series vs. the Cardinals.
