Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — Through the first seven games of the season, victories were hard to come by for the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team.
In fact, were it not for a one point, 59-58 win over Concordia on Dec. 9, the Cardinals would have gone through the 2001 portion of the Cardinals' schedule winless.
But it's a new calendar year — and a new Cardinals team. After opening 2002 with a loss at St. Thomas, the Cardinals have won two straight, including Monday's 60-50 victory over Hamline.
Brett Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) scored a team-high 16 points, while Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) netted a career-high 14 points and Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) chipped in his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Cardinals (3-4 MIAC, 3-7 overall), fresh off a 72-69 win over Augsburg last Saturday, jumped out to a 32-26 halftime advantage against the Pipers, despite shooting just 38 percent (10 of 26) from the field. The second half proved to be more of the same as the Cardinals hit 11 of 25 field-goal attempts (44 percent) in outscoring Hamline 28-24 to seal the win.
Mike Robison scored a game-high 19 points and Tyler Petrich added 13 in the losing effort for Hamline (0-6, 1-10).
