Game Summary
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — For 20 minutes Wednesday, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team was virtually unstoppable against Carleton, shooting 40 percent from the field (10 of 25) en route to a 24-21 halftime advantage.
Problem was, a collegiate basketball game consists of two, 20-minute halves, not just one.
And in the second half, Carleton's sleeping giant awoke.
Steve Nuessle scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half and the Knights shot a sizzling 65 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes in cruising to a 70-63 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
The Cardinals — who had their season-high two-game winning streak snapped with the loss — mainatined the upper hand early in the second half, and led 33-31 before a 14-2 Carleton run, spearheaded by a pair of Nuessle 3-pointers, gave the Knights the lead for good.
Adam Kraemer (Oshkosh, Wis.) scored a team-high 17 points to lead four SMU players in double figures. Brett Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) finished with 15 points, while Lance Larson (Lakeville, Minn.) added 11 and Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) recorded his second straight double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Matt Stangl chipped in 15 points for Carleton (4-4 MIAC, 5-8 overall), whlie Tanner Schieck netted 15 points and 13 rebounds.
