Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — With so many new faces on his roster at the start of the season, Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Dan Blank knew his team was going to go through some growing pains this season.
Mistakes were going to be made, and, hopefully, the Cardinals would learn from those mistakes.
The learning continued Tuesday afternoon.
St. Olaf, capitalizing on SMU miscues, scored four goals in a span of 3:24 — twice just over two minutes apart in the first half and twice less than a minute apart in the second — en route to a 4-0 victory.
"St. Olaf is a very good team, and they proved that today," SMU coach Dan Blank said. "But we were our own worst enemy. All four of their goals came off of mistakes by our defense. When you are a young team like we are, you are going to make mistakes. The problem is, a team like St. Olaf is going to make you pay for those mistakes."
Emily Klamm opened the scoring at the 26:07 mark, taking a feed from Carolyn Detjen and beating SMU goalkeeper Dianna Kyllo (Kasson, Minn.). Siri Stelter made it 2-0 two minutes later as she beat Kyllo with an unassisted goal.
The Oles' quick-strike offense was at it again in the second half as Brie Messick scored twice in a span of 55 seconds to seal the win.
"Take away four minutes, and it's a 0-0 game," said Blank, whose team has now lost nine straight. "It wasn't a bad performance on our part — just some bad mistakes.
"This team is pretty resilient — we'll bounce back."
