WINONA, Minn. —
Eric Lindquist knew heading into Saturday's dual meet against Gustavus that his Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams were going to have their hands full.
But not even Lindquist expected his Cardinals to be manhandled the way they were — by just half of the Gusties.
"Gustavus is such a deep, deep team," explained Lindquist, noting that half of the Gusties competed against the Cardinals, while the other have were in the Twin Cities, competing in another meet. "It's tough to compete against a team that's that deep, and it makes it that much tougher knowing that they can split their squad in half and still dominate the way they did."
Despite the lopsided final scores, not all was lost for the Cardinals, who got first-place finishes in five individual events.
Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) captured the 100 meter freestyle, touching the wall in 1:01.47, while diver Holly Fujii (Elk Grove, Ill.) won the three-meter competition with a score of 187.80.
On the men's side,
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) won the 1,000 freestyle (11:19.31), while
Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) stopped the clock first in the 100 backstroke (57.98) and
Erik Oksnevad (Blaine, Minn.) won the one-meter diving competition, blowing away the field with a score of 239.2.
"We had some very good swims — Logan dominated the 1,000, Scott swam a solid race in the 100 back, Erik and Holly were outstanding on the board, and Lindsay continued to show why she is one of our top sprinters," said Lindquist. "In a meet like this, the (team) loss is a little tough to swallow, but the individual performances were good to see."
