Game Summary
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — Being named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week certainly didn't have any adverse affect on the way Jamie Rattunde (Rollingtone, Minn.) played in the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team's conference game against Bethel Monday evening.
The sophomore forward poured in 14 points and added 12 rebounds en route to her third double-double of the season.
Problem was, Rattunde did get much help from the rest of the Cardinals as Bethel pulled away late for a 64-57 victory.
"It was one of those nights where we just couldn't seem to do anything right," admitted SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose team shot just 34 percent from the field (24-for-70) and 50 percent from the line (6-for-12). "We were getting open looks, we just couldn't knock them down."
The Cardinals actually led by four for most of the second half, but Bethel rallied to tie the game at 57-57. SMU missed the front end of a one-and-one and Bethel went on to score the game's final seven points to ice the win.
"When you are struggling with your shot, you start to press a bit more, and that's what we were doing," said Messmann, whose team falls to 2-2 in the MIAC and 2-4 overall. "Bethel tried to take away (Rattunde) inside, which opened us up around the perimeter, but we couldn't take advantage of it."
Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) scored a team-high 17 points for SMU, while Anna Cunningham led the way for Bethel (2-1 MIAC, 3-2 overall), scoring 22 points and adding 14 rebounds.
